Opening Reception for Dalton Rooney @ Design Within Reach, 76 Montague St. (btwn Hicks & The Promenade), 718-643-1015, www.dwr.com. Life Defined Design: Dalton Rooney. As part of our ongoing local photography series, join us for an exhibit of the work of Dalton Rooney. On display through August 14, Rooney's work captures the spirit of Brooklyn through black and white and color, still life photography. Originally hailing from Joshua tree, California, Rooney will be on hand to answer any questions and his pieces will be for sale. Join us in support of local artists. Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art is pleased to announce its two summer exhibtions, "ConTEXTual" and "Sfumato". "ConTEXTual" is a group exhibition featuring text in art by Marc Brotherton, Peter Cavin, Michel Demanche, Steven Dobbin, Hee Sook Kim, and Wanda Taylor Remington. "Sfumato" features paintings inspired by the walls of Italy by artist Steven Perkins. On display through August 24th.

Andrew Newbold "Object and Atmosphere" Opening Reception @ Rebert Lehman Gallery at UrbanGlass, 647 Fulton Street; enter at 57 Rockwell Place, 3rd Floor (btwn Fulton & DeKalb), 718-625-3685, www.urbanglass.org. Free and open to the public. Philadelphia-based artist Andrew Newbold's glass and metal sculpture and site-specific installation reflect the artist's interpretation of his own experience with industry. Specifically with glass production, a manufactured landscape that has been embraced. Following the opening reception, UrbanGlass hosts a Rock the Hot Shop event from 9:00 pm to midnight, which raises funds for the UrbanGlass Education program. Opening Reception for Katherine Lorimer @ Design Within Reach, 76 Montague St. (btwn Hicks & Montague Terrace), 718-643-1015, www.dwr.com. As part of our ongoing local photography series, join us for an exhibit of the work of Katherine Lorimer. On display through July 16, Lorimer photographs ephemeral art wherever she can find it. About two years ago, she first became aware of street art while walking through Williamsburg. It was a piece by Swoon that literally stopped her in her tracks and opened her eyes to the beauty of non-commercial art on the streets. Excited and motivated by what she saw, she started photographing the ephemeral art wherever she could find it. Join us Thursday June 21 in support of local artists. Summer Exhibition: Emerging Artists @ Smack Mellon,92 Plymouth St. (btwn Wasington & Main), 718-834-8761, www.smackmellon.org. Artists: Theresa Bloise, Tracey Goodman, Virginia Poundstone, Devin Powers, Svetlana Rabey, Jason Rosenberg, Michael Schall and Suzanne Song. Smack Mellon's summer exhibition is curated by an emerging curator and includes artists selected from Smack Mellon's Emerging Artists Exhibition Program, an annual open call to emerging artists. This year, emerging curator and Smack Mellon's Director of Exhibitions, Suzanne Kim, has selected eight exciting emerging artists to present their work. These diverse works collectively re-examine and represent existing and imaginary spaces.

"It Happened in Brooklyn" @ Brooklyn Historical Society

. This exhibit will highlight key moments in our nation's history and how they played out in Brooklyn. Through artifacts from the Brooklyn Historical Society's permanent collection such as photographs, artworks, and documents, visitors will meet a diverse range of residents from Brooklyn?s earliest Native American settlements, to the men and women who fought in the Revolutionary War on Brooklyn's shores, to the Brooklynites who worked to abolish slavery, immigrants from all over the world who made Brooklyn home, and the women who kept America going by working in the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II. It Happened in Brooklyn has been made possible by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation and Astoria Federal Savings.

A Candy-Coated Time Capsule - paintings by Kenneth Kudulis @ Serimony

. Opening Reception and Cocktails with the Artist Friday, April 27, 6 to 9 PM. Kenneth's newest pieces are a vibrant look at days gone by, with astonishing witticism. His clever take on early 20th Century imagery and his use of color has made for a graphically bold collection and makes us realize the relevance of these images today, as refelcted in pieces such as "Shhhh!" and "Pin-up". Provoking and vivid, these paintings will be on exhibition and for sale through June 1.
