Spirit Hunter Part II Connecting to Gods, Spirits, and Ancestors
Brooklyn, New York: March 10, 2007:
Artist Andre Martinez's words, “I speak with my ancestors spirits and flow with their sacred spirit," are made manifest in the exhibition, Spirit Hunter Part II which will be presented at Henry Gregg Gallery, 111 Front Street, Suite 226 in Brooklyn's DUMBO section.
The exhibit, which runs from April 5, 2007 through May 26, 2007, will showcase over 100 fine art photographs and several oil paintings which will complement them.
The photographs, which were taken over a four-month period, are remarkable for what Martinez's eye and lens both captures and conjures.
Although these images were taken of what one would consider the mundane (such as a floor tile, a lampshade, graveyard flowers) these are decidedly not ordinary images nor was there a plan.
When one looks at these color prints, the ordinary becomes startlingly extra-ordinary, not only for their dream-like quality, but for the actual spirits that appear in the frames.
Though the artist has not manipulated the prints beyond usual developing techniques, the photographs actually reveal the immaterial with the material object or landscape.
A print of a simple linoleum tile, for example, looks remarkably like, a strange tableaux of the crucified Christ supine on a globe with darkness surrounding him. Martinez truly does summon gods, ancestors and spirits, including that of his late brother, Michelangelo.
Upon entering the Henry Gregg Gallery, the viewer will experience the power evoked by these enlightening images. " I pledge allegiance to the earth, one planet, many gods, and to the universe in which she spins. I pledge allegiance to the earth and all the life which it supports/one planet in our care, with sustenance and respect for all.
The world with which you were born is just one model of reality.
Other cultures are not failed attempts at being you. They are unique manifestations of the human spirit." Wade Davis "To Understand The Spirit You Must Become One With The Spirit! Recognize Its Existence And Let It Flow Through You.
SPIRIT HUNTER….PART TWO Echoing the lines, ‘I speak with my ancestor spirits and flow with their sacred spirit’, Andre Martinez's collection of photographs resonates with a translucency and other worldly-ness. They are almost like lucid dreams where the world seems to be manifestly there, but its meaning remains unattainably latent.
Vision insists and we look to find and experience it.
The silence of photography is rarely even noticed and yet silence is what allows these photographs to do what they do and to be what they are.
And watching them the eye seems to be emboldened and illuminated as we go deeper into the meaning and depth of his inspiration.
One looks at these photographs sensing that they are full of certainties and haunting reasons and there is a thirst for seeing more.
As we leave part two of Spirit Hunter, we feel a sense of accomplishment, a sense of completion, almost as though Martinez took us on a spirit quest where we were led into the sublime and then left to walk through the many layers of self and find within us what we truly are or have the capacity to be.
And as each ones vision was revealed we returned slightly parched and thirsty from the long walk but elated and enhanced by the depth of what was revealed to each of us. Confirmation 2007©
